A girl has died after an accident at a swimming pool during a festive family holiday abroad.

The youngster, from Bishop Auckland, County Durham, passed away in Britain on Boxing Day - three days after the initial incident at a pool in Egypt.

It is believed the family had been staying at a resort on the country's Red Sea coast during the festive period.

The girl had difficulty while in a swimming pool on December 23 and was in intensive care at an Egyptian hospital before she was flown back to the UK for treatment.

Travel firm TUI are believed to have flown the girl and her family home on Christmas, but she sadly passed away the next day.

A spokesman for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office said: 'We are aware of reports of the tragic death of a British child after an incident in a swimming pool in Egypt. Assistance was provided in this case by the family's tour operator.'

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office added they were not asked to assist with the family because their travel home had been arranged by a tour operator, but that officials would try to support them if necessary.

Dave Fleming, Bishop Auckland Town Councillor, said: 'The thoughts and well-wishes of the town council go out to the family and we keep them in our prayers.'

TUI declined to comment.
