Hobart cyclist Madeleine Fasnacht stamps herself as star of the future after being crowned junior rider of year

STAR in the making Madeleine Fasnacht has capped a stellar 2017 after being crowned the Cycling Australia junior cyclist of the year.

The Hobart teenager, who also took out the junior road cyclist of the year, has swept all before her, winning World Championship bronze, the Commonwealth Youth Games time trial gold medal, dual national crowns and an Oceania title.

Fasnacht also performed strongly in the National Road Series, finishing second in the under-23 age group and 10th overall riding for the TIS.

Fellow Tasmanians Richie Porte and Amy Cure were finalists in the elite road and elite track categories respectively.

Michael Matthews had a night to remember, awarded the Sir Hubert ‘Oppy’ Opperman Medal and Trophy after being crowned 2017 cyclist of the year, adding to his people’s choice award and road cyclist of the year gongs.

Matthews became just the third Australian to win the Tour de France green jersey, scorching to the sprinting honour with two stages wins.

Katrin Garfoot won her third straight female road cyclist of the year award after becoming just the second Australian female cyclist to win World Championships medals in the time trial and road race in the same year, while Cameron Meyer and Stephanie Morton were named male and female track cyclists of the year.
