NEW DELHI: A 28-year-old man has been apprehended for allegedly molesting a minor boy in a metro train.
The suspect, Jitender Gautam, is a resident of Kheda Khurd village in North West Delhi. He is a graduate and works in a private firm.
Police said that on May 3, a boy tweeted about the molestation. He said on social media that he was going home by metro and had reached Rajiv Chowk station, when a person began touching his hip with his finger while he was boarding.
The boy thought it might have been a mistake, but the suspect continuously molested the minor until he reached Kashmere Gate station.
Police said they took suo motu cognisance of the incident and registered a case under Section 355 (assault or use of criminal force with intent to dishonour a person, otherwise than on grave provocation) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), and a case under Section 8 of the POCSO Act was registered.
"During the investigation, the CCTV footage of 15 metro stations from Rajiv Chowk to Jahangirpuri station was scanned to identify the alleged molester. It came to notice that the accused alighted at Jahangirpuri," deputy commissioner of police (metro) G Ram Gopal Naik said.
The travel history of the suspect was checked, and it was discovered that the accused had boarded the train at Kaushambi station.
The CCTV footage in the vicinity of Kaushambi station was scanned and he was found using the service road near the metro. A number of shopkeepers, guards and local people were asked about the suspect after they were shown a photograph of the suspect.
Finally, the suspect was traced and apprehended.
