Bishop’s Cleeve secured their place in the Southern League Division One South play-offs with Ross Langworthy’s last-minute penalty giving them a 1-0 win over Evesham United on Monday.

Cleeve are odds-on to finish third in the table, which would book them a home semi-final to be played on Wednesday, April 30, ahead of this weekend’s final game at relegated Cribbs.

The Mitres’ win also hit Evesham’s title bid, as they now sit second, three points behind Yate, and finish the regular season at home to Bashley, while Yate are at home to Didcot.

Cleeve were reduced to 10 men when Will Turner was dismissed for a second bookable offence, but earned a penalty in the last moments of the game after a foul on Jay Malshanskyj, and skipper Langworthy stepped up and smashed the penalty home.

Behind the top three, it is a four-way battle for the last two play-off spots.

Currently holding the two places are Malvern Town, who beat already-relegated Cinderford Town 4-0 thanks to second half goals from Harry Clark (two), Jack Watts and Joe Bullock, and Mousehole, who were held to a 1-1 draw by Cornish rivals, Falmouth Town.

Malshanskyj went through one-on-one, however the forward scuffed his shot and Thatcham had a brilliant one-on-one chance themselves but put it wide before Cleeve substitute James Harding was wide with a headed effort.

Thatcham thought they had broken the deadlock as they had the ball in the net but it was ruled offside, then they saw an effort ricochet off the bar.

Evesham had gone into the game at Cleeve leading the table by virtue of a two-goal advantage on goal difference over Yate with Jordy N’Gathe, Reegan Messenger and Lewis Middleton seeing them past Didcot Town 3-0.
