EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (WEAU) - Many law enforcement across the region were seeing a lot of drugs, but this time for a good reason.

It’s the bi-annual national medication take back day with Eau Claire, Altoona and Chippewa Falls all participating.

Since the event started in Eau Claire in 2012, the county has collected and disposed of 42,000 pounds of medications.

The county, along with assistance from the Eau Claire County Sheriff’s department and Mayo Clinic collect any pills, inhalers or sharps that the community needed to dispose of.

The medications will be stored until they can be collected and properly disposed of.

“This is a great event that we can host. It’s a day that we can remind everybody to get rid of the unused medications just for safety in the home. It prevents the risk of overdoses, accidental poisonings for children, animals, older adults.” Chelsie Klatt, Public Health Nurse, Eau Claire City-County Health Department said.

If you were unable to attend, take back day, there are secure deposit boxes for any drugs you wish to dispose of at the Altoona emergency Services, Eau Claire Government facilities and area hospitals.
