Sovereignty surges to victory in the 151st Kentucky Derby
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (KYMA, KECY) - Sovereignty made a statement at Churchill Downs Saturday, powering through wet, muddy conditions to win the 151st Kentucky Derby and take the first step toward the 2025 Triple Crown.
The colt broke late and hung back in the early going, letting long shots like Citizen Bull and Neoequos set the pace up front.
But in the final stretch, Sovereignty found another gear. The rain didn't slow him down it set the stage for a dramatic close as he swung wide and overtook the field, holding off the favorite, Journalism, in the final strides.
Despite a day of scratches and shifting odds, Sovereignty delivered for bettors and his connections. He closed at 7-1 and gave trainer Bill Mott one of the most satisfying wins of his long career. The victory also marked a first Kentucky Derby triumph for owner Godolphin and jockey Junior Alvarado.
The race unfolded under constant rain, which soaked the track and added unpredictability to an already wide-open field.
Two horses, Rodriguez and Grande, were scratched in the lead-up, giving a late spot to Baeza, who made the most of the opportunity with a strong showing.
Now, with the first leg complete, all eyes shift to the Preakness Stakes.
The win keeps the dream alive for Sovereignty and for racing fans hoping for a Triple Crown run in 2025.
