Valentine’s Day, the day of love and romance, has been nothing but blood and fear for the past three years. A serial killer jumping from city to city has been killing couples every Valentine’s Day.
“Heart Eyes” is a horror, comedy, romance movie. While it’s got a decent amount of gore, most of the scenes feel like your typical romance movie.
The two main characters are in an enemies-to-lovers romance. And while working through that, they are also fighting a serial killer who is hunting them.
The cast is pretty decent, with the two main characters, Ally McCade, played by Olivia Holt, and Jay Simmonds, played by Mason Gooding.
The movie doesn’t take itself too seriously, which is a good thing. As evidence of this, the two police detectives you meet are Jeanine Shaw (Jordana Brewster) and Zeke Hobbs (Devon Sawa). When Ally meets them, she asks if they were Hobbs and Shaw like the movie, which gets the confused responses that they haven’t heard of it.
The special effects were pretty good. There is a decent amount of blood and gore, which gives the movie a typical slasher feel. Though you don’t get much of that.
It feels like it’s jumping around quite a lot. It does have the typical slasher parts, with chase scenes, but then we get set into some kind of enemies-to-lovers romcom. Even somehow in the middle of a chase scene, you get into a laid-back heart-to-heart.
I wouldn’t recommend the movie for most viewers, though, if you have Netflix, it might not be a terrible pick, personally wouldn’t go out of my way to watch it though. It’s a total of 1h 37m, and at times felt like it was somehow over, even with an hour left to go. I’m not a romance-based person, so most of the movie felt slow and uninteresting most of the time. I’m sure this movie is a perfect fit for some people or even a good compromise if a couple has one person who loves romance movies and another who loves slashers.
