Olympics Roundup: August 5th

This summer, the Olympics are taking place in Paris, France.

Here at ESPN Southwest Louisiana, we want to make sure you are kept in the know with all things happening regarding the USA as well as athletes with local ties.

Pole Vault

  • Lafayette native and former LSU Tiger Mondo Duplantis won the gold medal in the Men’s Pole Vault. He also broke his own world record, reaching 6.25 meters
  • Team USA’s Sam Kendricks earned the silver in Men’s Pole Vault
  • Team USA’s Bridget Moon advanced to the final for Women’s Pole Vault; Team USA’s Brynn King and Bridget Williams did not advance

Artistic Gymnastics

  • Team USA’s Simone Biles and Sunisa Lee competed but did not medal in the Women’s Balance Beam
  • Team USA’s Simone Biles won silver in Women’s Floor Exercise while Team USA’s Sunisa Lee got bronze

3X3 Basketball

  • Former LSU Tiger Hailey Van Lith and Team USA lost in the semifinals of Women’s 3X3 to Spain 18-16. However, they defeated Canada 16-13 to earn the bronze medal

Athletics

  • Team USA earned a silver medal in the Mixed Relay Triathlon
  • Team USA’s Rai Benjamin won his heat and advanced to the semi-final of Men’s 400m Hurdles; Team USA’s CJ Allen also advanced to semi-final; Team USA’s Trevor Bassitt did not advance to semi-final
  • Team USA’s Sam Mattis, Andrew Evans, and Joseph Brown competed in the Men’s Discus Throw but did not advance to the final
  • Team USA’s Aaliyah Butler and Alexis Holmes both advanced to the semi-finals of the Women’s 400m; Team USA’s Kendall Ellis did not advance
  • Team USA’s Kenneth Rooks advanced to the final of the Men’s 3000m Steeplechase; Team USA’s James Corrigan and Matthew Wilkinson did not advance
  • Team USA’s Kenneth Bednarik, Noah Lyles, and Erriyon Knighton all won their heats and advanced to the semi-finals of the Men’s 200m
  • Team USA’s Valarie Allman won gold in the Women’s Discus Throw
  • Team USA’s McKenzie Long, Gabrielle Thomas, and Brittany Brown all advanced to the final of the Women’s 200m
  • Team USA’s Karissa Schweizer, Elise Cranny, and Whittni Morgan competed in the Women’s 5000m final but did not medal
  • Team USA’s Juliette Whittaker competed in the Women’s 800m but did not medal

Beach Volleyball

  • Team USA’s Chase Budinger and Miles Evans were eliminated from Men’s Beach Volleyball in the Round of 16 by Canada (16-21, 14-21)
  • Team USA’s Miles Partain and Andrew Benesh advanced in Men’s Beach Volleyball in the Round of 16, defeating Italy (21-17, 21-18)
  • Former LSU Tigers and Team USA’s Taryn Kloth and Kristen Nuss were defeated in the Women’s Round of 16 by Canada (19-21, 18-21)

Volleyball

  • Team USA’s men won their quarterfinal match against Brazil 3 sets to 1

Equestrian

  • Team USA’s Karl Cook and Laura Kraut advanced to the final of Individual Jumping, while McLain Ward did not advance

Shooting

  • The Team USA duo of Austen Jewell Smith and Hancock Vincent qualified for the Gold Medal Match in Mixed Team Qualifications. They earned the silver medal
  • The Team USA duo of Dania Jo Vizzi and Conner Lynn Prince placed 6th and did not qualify

Diving

  • Team USA’s Delaney Schnell qualified for the semi-final of the Women’s 10m Platform, however, she did not make the final
  • Team USA’s Daryn Wright did not qualify but made it as a reserve for the semi-final of Women’s 10m Platform

Sport Climbing

  • Team USA’s Jesse Grupper and Colin Duffy competed in the semi-finals of Men’s Boulder and Lead but did not advance

Sailing

  • Team USA’s Daniela Moroz placed second in Race 5 and advances straight to the final of the Women’s Kite
  • Team USA’s Sarah Newberry Moore and David Liebenberg competed in the Mixed Multihull but did not advance
  • Team USA’s Erika Reineke placed 9th and advanced to the final of the Women’s Dinghy

Wrestling

  • Team USA’s Amit Elor won both of her Women’s Freestyle matches and her semi-final match. She will be in the final
  • Team USA’s Adam Jacob Coon lost his Men’s Greco-Roman Match to Amin Mirzazadeh

Canoe Slalom

  • Team USA’s Evy Leibfarth competed in the Women’s Kayak Cross Quarterfinals but did not advance

Water Polo

  • Team USA’s Men defeated Croatia 14-11 in a preliminary round match

Artistic Swimming

  • Team USA placed 4th in the Team Technical Routine
