If you're scouring the globe for a cost-effective escape this summer, tap into the insight of a new study that highlights Sarajevo, Bosnia, as the second best "budget" holiday hotspot.
Tucked into the serene Sarajevo valley and cradled by the Dinaric Alps, the charming city of Sarajevo may be compact, but it's rich in cultural wealth.
This wealth, though, doesn't come with a hefty price tag. In fact, Rough Guides named it the second best budget holiday on the continent, only beaten by the Albanian coast.
Offering stunning views of lush, mountainous landscapes, a suite of museums dedicated to its storied past, and an abundance of tours, Sarajevo stands out as an inviting destination for travellers seeking a brief but vibrant getaway.

The city is catching the eye of budget-wise Brits for its impressive affordability, say eurochange specialists.
"Countries in South Eastern Europe such as Bosnia, Slovenia and Montenegro have absolutely stunning scenery, but are very cheap to travel to and stay," confirms Laura Evans-Fisk, head of digital engagement at eurochange.
Eurochange's research indicates you could enjoy a three-course meal in Sarajevo for under £11. And what about a beer to accompany your meal?
Expect to pay around £1.75 on average, reports The Express.

For comparison's sake, Finder.com reports the current average price for a beer in London in 2024 standing at a steep £5.50, while across the UK it averages at £5.44 - making Sarajevo's offerings a downright steal.
Sarajevo isn't just light on the pocket when it comes to nosh and bevvies. Lodgings kick off from an inviting £56 per person for a night's stay, while airfares can dip to £48 (based on July 2024 departure data from Stansted Airport).
Although swankier digs can be found in town – with some top-drawer hotels selling rooms north of £100 – there are still purse-friendly picks aplenty.
Flights from London should take you just shy of three hours.
