GLACIER, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) has announced the reopening of the final 2.7-mile stretch of the Mount Baker Highway.
Known to many as the Road to Artist Point, WSDOT says the stretch of road will reopen at 8 a.m. on Friday, June 27. The department says crews removed up to 20′ of snow covering the road and at the parking lot of Artist Point.
At this time, trails that can be accessed at Artist Point are still covered in deep snow, with most signs unavailable to be seen. It is recommended to plan ahead before embarking on these trails as cell service is limited in the area.
Travelers can expect to see crews from the U.S Forest Service and WSDOT who will continue to maintain the road throughout the summer.
Also reopening on June 27 is the Heather Meadows Visitor Center which will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily.
WSDOT estimates that more than 650 vehicles travel each day to visit Artist Point once it reopens each summer.
