England Women's Sevens managed to beat Fiji 17-5 in the inaugural women's competition at the Commonwealth Games - with the help of a Welshwoman!

The women's rugby sevens tournament on the Gold Coast is the first time the event has been staged as part of the Games.

England took to the field for the first time with Cardiff-born Megan Jones as part of their squad, meeting Fiji in their pool opener.

Jones moved away from Wales when she was 16 to go to Hartpury College and picked up her first cap for England Sevens in 2015, aged 17.

England managed to score three tries against Fiji, coming from Deborah Fleming, Emily Scarratt and Lydia Thompson - with 21-year-old Jones making a superb offload for Scarratt to run the length of the pitch and score a stunning try.

A non-playing reserve at the 2016 Olympics, Jones joined the England Sevens programme for the 2017-2018 campaign and was part of the team to face New Zealand in the final of the Women's Rugby World Cup last year.

Welsh speaker Jones was the first Welsh player to make a world final since Wrexham-born hooker Dorian West was on the bench for the 2003 men’s final, with New Zealand going on to become world champions.

Jones later faced Australia with England in their second match in Pool B, but the hosts won 29-12.

Meanwhile, Wales Women's Sevens lost out to hosts Australia 34-5 despite their best efforts. Defence from the Olympic champions and tournament favourites was difficult to break down during Wales' opener, but Jasmine Joyce managed to secure a great try.

Joyce went on to score her second try of the day against Fiji, who claimed a 29-7 victory over Wales.

Joyce said: "It's a massive learning curve for us. We're the only amateur team here so it makes a big difference to us."
