Most of the men were teenagers, lured by the promise of a decent pension for their service, with little hope of knowing the devastation they would find in a country where two nuclear bombs had been detonated. The returned Australian servicemen, now fewer than 700, have been fighting ever since for a full service pension and medical benefits promised by then prime-minister Ben Chifley.

AUSTRALIA IN VIETNAM
The Vietnam War, involving more than 60,000 Australian personnel, was the longest conflict in which the nation has participated. It grew rapidly from 30 military advisers in 1962 to include a battalion in 1965 and finally, in 1966, a task force. The war was the most controversial in the nation’s history, with protest marches a regular occurrence, since the conscription referendums of World War I. Many of those who served were conscripted by a national lottery or the “Birthday Ballot”, officially known as the National Service Scheme. More than 500 Australian servicemen lost their lives, while 3000 were wounded in Vietnam.

AUSTRALIA AT THE SECOND BOER WAR
An escalating conflict between the British Empire and the Boer republics of southern Africa, led to the outbreak of the Second Boer War, in October 1899 that lasted 30 months until May 1902. In a show of support for the empire, the governments of the self-governing British colonies of Canada, New Zealand, Natal, Cape Colony and the six Australian colonies (not yet the Federation of Australia) offered fighting men to the Empire. Australians numbered more than 16,000 men, the largest contribution from the Empire, and a further 7000 Australians served in other units. More than 50 Australian women served as nurses. Australian casualties included more than 550 dead, 251 killed in action, 267 of disease and 43 missing in action. Another 735 were severely wounded.

Force. The intention was to deploy to the Middle East to join the other Australian divisions, but with war looming with Japan, the division was divided into four and deployed across the Asia-Pacific region in 1941. By February 1942 all four divisions had effectively been destroyed during fighting in Singapore, Rabaul, Ambon, and Timor. Most members became prisoners of war until the end of the war. More than one in three died in camps.

AUSTRALIA AT THE KOREAN WAR
During the Korean War from 1950-53, more than 17,000 Australians, in the Army, Navy and Air Force, fought as part of the United Nations (UN) multinational force, defending South Korea from the Communist force of North Korea. The United Nations, with the United States as the principal force, came to the aid of South Korea. China came to the aid of North Korea, and the Soviet Union gave support. Backing the US, The Menzies Government in Australia called for 1000 men, who had prior military experience in World War II, to enlist in the army for three years, with one year of overseas service in Korea, to ensure a rapid deployment to the international crisis. On-again, off-again armistice negotiations over two years were finally concluded on July 27, 1953. Australia suffered 339 dead, and 1200 wounded in the conflict.
